UFPEA GIZ- PROJECT

UFPEA Receives Financial Support from GIZ-RFBC to Support Nile Perch Resources Sustainable Management.

UFPEA GIZ-RFBC Project.

Uganda Fish Processors & Exporters Association (UFPEA) received financial support from GIZ Responsible Fisheries Business Chain (GIZ-RFBC) to contribute to the Nile Perch Resources Sustainable Management. This was after the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) developed a Special Initiative known as One World-No Hunger (SEWOH) which aims to improve food security and eradicate hunger.

The fisheries sector contributes to the Special Initiative through the GIZ Global Programme for Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture. This global programme comprises several projects, one of which is the GIZ SEWOH Fisheries Project of the Uganda country package entitled Responsible Fisheries Business Chains (RFBC) project.

UFPEA ACTIVITIES IMPLEMENTED UNDER GIZ RFBC.

UFPEA Self-monitoring initiative.

In 2017, the Ugandan Fish Processors and Exporters Association (UFPEA) launched a self-monitoring initiative to prevent the processing of immature fish. A manual of self-monitoring inspection guidelines was developed to be used during unannounced inspections.

In 2007, at a regional meeting among three sister associations, it was agreed to introduce a self-monitoring and control mechanism at a regional level. Uganda kickstarted this exercise in August 2007, followed by Tanzania and Kenya. Due to the intensive fisheries resource management efforts, voluntary monitoring, control, and surveillance, the industry has recovered. The number of operational factories has increased from 5 to 14.

Training of fish factories.

The main purpose of this training was to create awareness on the strict slot size of Nile Perch and Nile Tilapia and the regulations concerning fish fillets and handling of undersize fish in factories. The participants in this training were front line supervisors at various sections of the processing plants and key staff at fish reception stage.

The self-monitoring guidelines were reviewed and some changes incorporated which necessitated the training of factory staff on these reviewed guidelines.

Participation Support for EAIFFPA meetings

UFPEA participated in the East African Industrial fishing and Fish Processors Association (EAIFFPA) regional meeting. The two-day meeting was held in Mwanza & Uganda and was attended by the National Association Chairpersons, the regional association chairperson, and technical people of the national association secretariats.

GIZ supported UFPEA in development of pictorial materials and Videography used for training fish handlers.
